I’m on the Sears website and I’m looking at 2 different types of routers.

The 1st is a Craftsman 9.5 Amp 1-3/4 HP Plunge Base Router $80
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00917540000P?mv=rr

Pros: Soft Start, LED Worklight, Good Price
Cons: No Variable Speed, Not Digital

The 2nd is a Craftsman 2 hp 10 amp Digital Router $100
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00917517000P?mv=rr

Pros: Digital Display, Variable Speed
Cons: No LED Worklights, A different base is needed to use [Porter Cable] bushings.

I personally would go with a Bosch, Makita, Milwaukee, or DeWalt. They’ll be running long after the crafsman is in the trash. Ben Thayer & Don Thatt

I wouldn’t buy ANY Craftsman power tools, they are essentially junk. Get your Dad a Porter-Cable 693 Kit. Probably the best router deal on the market today (copy and paste the link for more info. Jeffrey J

Buying your Dad a Crafstman power tool will be a good choice….Other good ones and the brand that I stock my shop with are Dewalt units..
Beyond that then look into Bosch/Prter Cable and then when money begins to be an issue look further into Ryobi/Makita…Other thatn Crafstmand all the other brands can be seen /handled and purchased at your local home depot or Lowes.. harley MIke

Check the Home Depot or Lowes websites. I have a Skil dual base, 2-1/4 HP router that works great for the home handyman. It was $65. Remember, even a great tool will be less effective if you buy cheap bits. sensible_man

I just burned out my Craftsman router today. It is junk. Craftsman used to be a good name, but it all comes from China now. A router works on RPM, and variable speed is not important. Make your brand selection based on other input. Merry Christmas. Your dad will love any router you get him. iluv2tradestks

Power tools are one of those things that you should consider an investment. A quality tool can last your dad decades and may some day be handed down through the generations in your family. I personally have had a lot of problems with a Craftsman router that I own and have not have good experiences with the quality of Porter Cable products.

That being said, I highly recommend that you consider Festool routers. The quality of their products is phenomenal and their service is unparalleled. You can check out their routers at.

You should also consider polling some of the more prominent woodworking forums on the web like woodnet.net or sawmillcreek.org.

    Best of luck! sho
