When are you required to have a license plate on a utility trailer in NC?

I recently bought a utility trailer to carry my construction tools with. I will not be hauling any type of equipment with it, so am I required to have a license plate in NC?

Trailers are registered the same way as a car. Visit the How do I Title & Register a Vehicle?” Section for the steps involved in registering a vehicle.
Any time a trailer is used on public roadways, it is required to be registered and have a license plate affixed.
