What tools would be in the perfect home workshop?

my avatar’s hot! asked:

I’m kitting out a workshop for my fiancee as a surprise when he moves to his new home. He wants to “tinker” mechanically, not woodworking, more car fix up or alternative energy creations. What would you put in his new workshop for tools? Thanks to all in advance!
3 great answers! Thank you everyone… I’ll do the workbench, the lighting, the shop vac, and then price out the rest of the items on the first answer list and give him a gift card to get them. Wonderful, thank you everyone!

Two ways to shop for tools. One is to buy from newspapers, Craig’s List, etc… Another way would be to shop at a major retail store such as Sears or Lowes. They will honor any return if he doesn’t like them.
Here could be the start of a basic set of tools:
A workbench and a light over it.
    Socket sets. SAE and Metric.
Auto electrical tools like a timer, voltage meter, etc…
    Shop Vac
    Screwdrivers
Wrenches. Get him the ratcheting kind.
    Vise grips, pliers
    Alan wrenches
Compressor. Capable of 100 lbs. Air tools.
    Congratulations and good luck!

People can be very particular about tools, have definite preferences. I’d rather buy my own tools unless someone knows exactly what I want. If you can pick his brain without him figuring it out–maybe be there when he looks through a tool catalogue or something like that–pay attention when he drools over something in a store–you can get things you know he wants. Otherwise, I might get a fabulous workbench and some good lighting installed, and give him a gift certificate or maybe a prepaid credit card so he can choose his own stuff.

Men who love their tools are very particular about them. May I suggest that you figure out just how much money you were going to spend on these tools, then get a gift card with that amount of money on it. Then take him out to dinner, then to the store, produce the card and let him go wild. Hope this helps.
