A tool belt, with allot of holding space, but not where it would get into the way.A Level is handy . Also if he has a drill, he might like some cutting drill bits. They cut like a saw, but look like a drill bit,and you use them in your drill. You can do cut outs for eletcrical boxes, ect. in drywall. Also a tool tote would be use full to carry his tools around. worm drive saws

    at least one recirocating saw

heavy duty drills and assorted drill bits for wood for steel for concrete

    several assorted levels 12″ 24″ 48″ 60″

a good stanley tape measure at least 25 foot preferably 35

a good quality hammer for framing usually 28 or 32 ounce

a good quality hammer for trim usually 20 or 22 ounce

a few different size ‘cats paws’ for nail removal

    a couple good pry bars 12″ 18″ 24″ and a 36″

at least one roto zip w/ assorted bits

a good quality air driven hammer for framing

a good quality air driven hammer for trim

    an air compressor

    a couple air hoses

a nice router with assorted bits

half of the bits cost more than the router itself

several sizes and styles of flat blade to do skim work

    a table saw

    a miter saw

    a cut off saw

a nice secure enclosed trailer to carry stuff around in

a strong truck to pull the trailer

and this only scratches the surface

    things like brooms dustpans chalklines

    are a daily needed event

if it is designed to build something up
or tear something down we carpenters want em

    all of em Imagine

    Good tool gift ideas:

Bosch makes a killer 12 volt impact driver; it’s small and light but it packs a punch and puts screws in a lot nicer than regular drills.

Speaking of Bosch, they make this great cube-shaped radio/CD player that’s perfect for the job site; it’s hardy, it has a battery charger (for bosch tools), and 4 GFCI outlets, so it also kind of functions as a power strip.

If he doesn’t have a 6 foot level yet, and he’s building a house, he’ll need one. They’re expensive but really nice.

A decent miter (make sure it’s a compound miter) saw isn’t too expensive and is great for a beginning carpenter.

Routers are great and once you start using them you wonder how you got by without them.

If he doesn’t have a compressor yet, that would also be nice; you could get him a small portable compressor and a nailgun (there are many sizes; the one I use most is a Senco finishing nailer). Compressors come in extremely handy.

He has a drill, but does he have bits? A nice big bit set is necessary.

Stanley makes a killer tape measure called FatMax that would make a good stocking stuffer. I’m also a big fan of the LeverLock model as well; that one’s not too expensive.

Speaking of stocking stuffers, consider one of those 4-in-1 (you can actually find a 10-in1) screwdrivers, that can change between different sizes of both phillips and slotted screwdriver and also work as nutdrivers.

If he needs a good hammer, My favorite all-purpose hammer is the Estwing 16-oz rip hammer with a flat face. Waffle face is good for framing, but is less versatile.

If he doesn’t have some nice vice grips, definitely get him a pair.

Hope that gives you some good ideas! djb
