I am planning to buy pro tools m-powered and am not really interested in the m-box interface. What I want to do is get a mixer with firewire and just plug it in directly to my macbook pro. Do I have to get the m-box or can I just use the instrument inpts and xlr plugs on the mixer? Basically, what are some other compatible mixers or core hardware for m-powered?

You are getting the Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-powered confused. Pro Tools LE comes with any of the M-box interfaces. Whereas Pro Tools M-powered is a separate software that you can purchase in order to run Pro Tools with M-Audio audio interfaces such as these:–925404/cat–M-Audio-Audio-Interfaces–3217

You are on the right track though. You can only use Pro Tools with Pro Tools hardware (HD and LE). The only exception is the recent introduction of Pro Tool M-powered where you can use PT with M-audio audio interfaces.

The LE and M-powered softwares are in general the same (both LITE version of PT HD). Hope this helps. Appleguy Appleguy
