text on using entertainment as a tool of power?
jennybastrup asked:
I am looking for a specific text, possible an essay or part of a longer text. (I originally found it in an anthology for an English class) It involves/is about the notion that governments or society uses entertainment or commercialism to control the population and keeping them happy and calm.

Do anyone know where to find this text or who it might be who wrote it. Any suggestions on similar texts are also welcome. Thank you.

Check out Bread and Circuses by Patrick Brantlinger (book): it covers this theme. ExeneC
I can think of a book that goes into this. Its old and rather odd. Its called Spartacus by TL Mancour. (http://www.psiphi.org/cgi/upc-db/booklist.html) Its one of the Star Trek Next Generation books. It talks about controlling the masses through entertainment. In this case its Colosseum-type conflicts fought by sentient androids that couldn’t take it anymore. Its an odd example, but it does go into that. Obviously, its science fiction.
