Li-Ion batteries are MUCH better than Ni-Cd’s. They’re lighter, give you more run time per charge, and generally will give you more charge cycles per battery. A 14.4V Li-Ion will give you the equivalent power of an 18V Ni-Cd or Ni-MH. Many Ni-Cd. batteries had problems with memory effect as well, although manufacturers claim that they have solved this problem. I just picked up a 14.4V Panasonic Li-Ion drill, and it’s amazing. Very light, very powerful. Put my Milwaukee on the shelf as a backup. Hope this helps. woodtick314

nicads have been replaced by the lithium. the lithiums last longer and dont retain memory like the nicads to. you can charge the lithium when ever you want too.. you dont have to wait until it is fully discharged before you put it on the charger like you do nicads.

never used porter cable so i cant say as to whether they’ll last like my makitas do.

if you are going to buy saws you had better buy about 2 or 3 more batteries, because if you plan on cutting more than a few boards you’ll need them. Disco_Lem0naid

Yup, lithium ion is the new standard. If you don’t use a cordless regularly though, it may be better if you get a Nickle Cad because they are becoming so cheap. You can save huge bucks and nicad will do the job.

I have a porter cable circular saw and I love it. If you need a trim saw (do you mean a miter saw?) I would reccomend an eight inch sliding compound miter saw. It is very light and can cut a 2×12 into on a 45 degree bevel. They are usually more expensive but check amazon’s prices. I got an Hitachi for $292. It is a great saw- use it every day. spellbound
