More than materials, tools, or technology, design philosophy has changed. Most present day reactor designs take advantage of physics to make thermal runaway impossible (inherently safe design). Some, such as the U.N. lead-cooled design, and the Hyperion (a uranium hydride design made here in New Mexico) are modular to the extent that you send the entire reactor back to the recycling center when the fuel is spent, a package too large to reasonably be hijacked. These reactors also are small and cheap enough, with short enough constgruction timetables, to take a lot of the gamble out of funding new nuclear power plants. virtualguy92107
