How do I lay tile in my “foyer”?
I have a small area in front of my back door that I would like to tile. I recently ripped up the old linoleum and all I have now is a sub floor. It’s hard to keep clean, and looks gross.
My husband keeps saying he will tile it, but never finds the time. I do not want to hire a handy man since times right now are tight. And this is not an emergency. I have done other home repairs and remodeling without his help.
I have a wet saw for tiles, and all the other tools I believe I might need. But i am looking for someone who can give me step by step instructions on how to lay the tile down. How to measure, where to start, how to put down the tile glue, etc. My knowledge of construction is quite limited. So if explained in a simple manner would be appreciated. And a list of the items needed to complete this job.
The tiles I will be laying are 12″ ceramic tiles (already purchased) and the area is approximatly 3′ x 4′ . There are doorways on each side. Basement door, outside door, bathroom door, and an entry way into my kitchen.
Thanks in advance.

I’m going to assume you are in the United States. The easiest thing to do in this case is visit a Home Depot or Lowe’s store. They offer mini-classes with step by step instructions on how to tile floors and they will be happy to answer any questions you have about the process.
You l need 2 sheets 1/2 inch cement board,1 bag white or grey latex modified thin set. 10# of sanded grout.. Something for a stairnosing..Cut board to fit. use a carbide tipped cutter to score and snap the board.Or for the little you need to cut a stanley knife will work in a pinch. After board is cut remove it , sweep and clean. Mix some thin set up and w/ a 1/4 by 1/4 square notched trowel spread it under the boards. Reset board and nail a minimum of 8 inch on center and more on seam..Nail w/ 1 1/2 inch galvanized roofing nail ( I like to use 2 in..Tape joint w/ cement board tape. Same or next day dry lay the tile to get biggest pieces all around. I like a whole piece where it meets the carpet or the most visible edge. Use a 1/4 by 3/8 trowel to set tiles with. Grout 24 hrs later. Any ??? e mail me GL
