Difference between power drill & screwdriver?
I need to buy a power tool to hang blinds and pictures and plant hooks and bracketed-shelves (with the long metal strip) - so, do I get a corded or cordless screwdriver or drill? I can understand the difference if they were not “powered” - but, with power, don’t they both do basically the same thing? (No, I’m not blonde!)

The screwdriver turns much slower to drive screws, not to drill holes. Captain C
really confused here.
get a “power drill”. can be battery or cordless. that should do the job for you pj_mark115
The easiest thing to do is to buy a cordless drill with a lithium battery (they last longer), most would come with a kit box that contains a small set of drill bits and screwdrivers. I recommend something with at least 18 volts (labeled 18V), that way you can use it for later projects around the house.
The most important thing to remember is to buy a stud finder. That would be around $15-20.
You can get all that at Home Depot or Lowes store, although Wal Mart tends to be cheaper.
Good luck. Twin Peak
If you buy a power screwdriver it will probably come with some drivers for different types of screws. If you buy a drill you will also have to buy the screwdriver bits. It may be the best buy if you have to drill the holes before you install the screws. miner32001
a power screwdriver has an adjustable clutch so you can set, and a drill doesnt mongo862001
many drills now can do both the drilling and driving but some cheap ones don’t have the power or gear ratios to do the screw driving. To do screw driving you need lots of low speed torq. As to cordless or corded thats up to you whether you want to roll out a cord all the time or wait for batteries to charge. If your not doing much work a corded model will be cheaper and you won’t have to worry about keeping batteries maintained and without the battery pack it will be able to fit into tight spaces easier. If you do chose cordless get a good 18v it will give you good power to tackle most jobs. Either way make sure its labled drill/driver so you know it can handle driving screws. c m
If you are just going to use around the house, I would get a corded drill. If you are going to use it inside and out side the house I would buy a cordless drill, 14 volt is fine, but if you are going to use it for construction type work I would use 18 volt or higher…… The difference between power drill and power screwdriver is, power drill can do both screw and drill with the proper attachments. Power screwdriver can only screw…
If you don’t want to buy one you can rent them at any equipment rental or Home Depot equipment rental. (not allHome Depot’s have them).. adevilchild38
OK. I’ve had both. I loved both. The screwdriver is only good for the screws. A drill on the other hand is good for both making holes and screwdriver things. Say you need to put in an anchor hook. You would have to get a drill and a screwdriver handy. But if you got a drill with a screwdriver bit then you would only need the one tool. A power screwdriver is lighter. But the power drill can also make holes ahead of time so that the screw will go in easier. It’s your choice. If you do a lot of this I would suggest the drill. It works as both and you are getting 2 tools in one. Me2
A cordless drill can be used for drilling and driving screws. Cordless power screw drivers are less powerful and not good for drilling holes. LH2468
