do i nead power monitors for pro tools to work?

i bought a m-audio mic and it came with pro tools essential and i can not hear any play back at all. this verson of pro tools limits you alot from option so i cant check to see if my speakers are working on the program. but my speakers do work with FL studio an itunes but why not pro tools? so i nead power monitors for it to work? i want to buy the whole verson of protools but i want to make sure if i nead power monitors for not. PLEASE HELP
