my dad is a carpenter and he had all of his big power tools stolen from his garage. who ever did it didnt bother taking the smaller tools.

my question is should he file a police report and if he finds his tools on ebay or in a pawn shop can he get them back? i heard you have to have a serial number is that like a receipt or something? because he bought those things years ago and i doubt he has a receipt.

What is the most effective way to complain about the police complacency? Former/current officers please advise

d_h_robbins asked:

I am not complaining about any kind of abuse of power, or with the intent of disciplinary action. Basically, my father’s construction business is almost going broke because of the sheer number of thefts. Yes, we have insurance, but it isn’t applicable when it is 5K in tools/copper stolen every 2-3 weeks. I realize in a number of instances nothing could be done, but recently, thefts have happened where all it would take is minimal action by police for us to recover some stolen items (they would have to talk to someone they already questioned - but our property wasn’t asked about; she was riding with suspect, who got caught for other thefts the same evening). This is a typical scenario. When we call detectives, we get voice mail all day long, all week, with no return calls. Beyond the initial paperwork, they seem complacent. I realize they are overworked and busy, but so are we. What is an appropriate way to complain, and to whom - not to cause trouble, but to simply get something done?

My boyfriend was questioned in a burglary. We think we know who did it. Do we have to report to police?

The Return of Pimp Stain asked:

In December of ‘07, a vacant apartment in our building was robbed of all the worker’s tools. My boyfriend, being in the construction field, was heavily questioned because he was familiar with the building, and knew the value of what was taken. But, he is innocent, and he is not a criminal.

Recently, there has been an arrest made, connected with a series of over twenty burglaries in our immediate area, stemming back to December ‘07.

The man arrested is our old roommate. He is familiar with the building, and was coming around at the time the apartment was robbed (we always turned him away).

He is already in jail on $210,000 bond. A detective did stop by recently, to “follow up” on the case, and again, questioned my boyfriend.

We are quite certain who did it. Question: are we obligated to report it to police? Will it clear my boyfriend’s name? Will we be required to testify against this guy?

Here is the news story, if anyone’s interested:

Alexjoss- I think you are right. But seriously, the only reason they suspected my boyfriend is because he works in construction. They have NOTHING to tie him to this crime. I just wonder if it’s worth the hassle to report what we think we know. Hell, we might even be wrong, but I don’t know.

I also worry about friends of Deluca’s coming after us. I have two children.

What if I only have liability insurance when 1 of these 3 scenarios happens, and I demand full compensation?

What if I file a complaint, go to my insurance claims adjuster, I bug the hell out of everyone telling saying how I want full compensation, but I only had liability when 1 of these 3 scenarios happens. I’m going to have enough money to get another car soon, I just want to protect myself from being screwed over, protected from wasting all that money. None of these actions would be my fault, they were the actions deliberatley and consciously done by a police officer. If was driving and I caused an accident, that’d be different. Unless I damn well know for sure I’ll receive full compensation if I keep bugging my insurance company or the police department, then I’m having second thoughts about getting another car at all.

With all that said, here are the 3 examples,

Example 1) In the movie “Walking Tall”, The Rock lets Johnny Knoxville tear up this guy’s shiny, new-looking red pick-up truck and lets him cut all the parts off down to the frame with power tools to look for drugs. Will he be fully compensated when it’s over?

Example 2) In the movie “Judge Dredd”, when this guy has too many unpaid parking tickets, Dredd just blows up the damn car. And it looked like a pretty damn expensive car to!!!!

Example 3) In the movie “Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift”, that cop in the beginning of the movie orders to have that kid’s car crushed and tells him by the time it’s too late. It was after the race when he and that other kid caused damage to housing construction.

I want to know if I will be fully covered even if I just have liability insurance if one of these scenarios happens. They are fictional, but I want to know if I’d be fully compensated in real life if they all happened in the exact same situations. Otherwise, why the God-da@n blue hell should I waste my God-dam@ money like that if I won’t be compensated?

Example 1) In the movie “Walking Tall”, The Rock lets Johnny Knoxville tear up this guy’s shiny, new-looking red pick-up truck and lets him cut all the parts off down to the frame with power tools to look for drugs. Will he be fully compensated when it’s over?

GIVE ME HONEST ANSWERS HERE, BECAUSE IF I WORK MY AS@ OFF TO BE ABLE TO PURCHASE A $50,000 CAR ALL AT ONCE, I DON’T WANT TO WASTE MY MONEY IF I WON’T BE FULLY COMPENSATED!!!!!!!!!

I mean, how many times could they steal catalytic converters off of cars, or steal telephone wires, for scrap copper… or steal tools from a construction site, before getting caught? Do they steal every night?
