For woodcarving/whittling is an expensive power carving tool better than the cheaper Dremel brand?

I’m just getting started in woodcarving small sculptures and I’d like to get a power tool to help out. I see that there are some that cost $300-800 (like the “Mastercarvers Micro Pro”) and then there is the Dremel tool and flexishaft accessory for less than $100. I don’t mind spending the extra money if it’s better product–I plan on using it a long time. Does anyone know the benefits of the more expensive products? What’s the difference?

coasterfreak110 asked:

I am fourteen years old, and I have used probably about a dozen power tools safely, and many times. I have become more interested in building, and have the money to buy a kit of the necessary power tools, but I cannot persuade my parents to allow me to have them, as they think power tools are not safe. Are there any statistics stating they are safe, or is there a way I can prove to them I know how to use these tools correctly?

What tools are essential for woodworking?

Scott asked:

I have drills, a miter saw, and circular saw; that’s it for my power tools. Aside from those tools, I have hammers, screw drivers, pliers, etc.

I have noticed that I am becoming very interested in woodworking and have done a few projects, but I want to continue to advance and perhaps someday be a furniture builder in my free time.

Which tools or power tools are absolutely essential to do your average woodworking project? Also, how can I learn more about these things? Is it just me, or is this the best past time ever?

D Fresh asked:

In the near future I want to start making wood crafts and sell them at craft shows just as a side job. It’s something I’ve always been interested in and I want to get an idea on how much it would cost me to get it started by making a list of power tools & machinery I would need. I already have an idea of what I might need but maybe more experienced people can name something I haven’t thought of.

I want to make my own jewelry from scratch, even the beads. What choices do I have as far as the materials I can use to make beads or pendants, for example, and what tools do I need to work with those particular materials?
Wow, y’all have great ideas! Thank you so much for the detailed answers. I can’t wait to get started.
Also, the rose petal idea sounds wonderful. If you wouldn’t mind sharing the recipe I would love to try it out!
