Why do so many men think women are totally unfamiliar with power tools when many women even like carpentry?

What’s the problem here?
Conda - I can use them fine and I jump at the chance to work with my hands. There’s a huge feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes with a well-done job. I get a real kick out of it, and I know other women do as well.
You should see me tree-pruning. My (male) friend thought it was too radical and was crying in Polish, English and French the whole time. He was in despair, and wringing his hands. When I was done, he had to admit: I did a beautiful job! He admitted it after the realtor selling his house remarked on the great job I had done, lol!
Conda - it’s the crowd you hang out with. Those aren’t ‘real women’!
Patois: I have observed the same ‘gorilla’ behavior! I can’t believe it, hahahaha! And I just dismissed it as ‘just him’ - but perhaps it’s really more like ‘them’? Too funny!

Sarah - aren’t they great? It’s like: “Meet Mr. Beltsander…look what he can do…” All that elbow grease - days and days of work - now completed in minutes! Bring ‘Em on Baby; a gal can never have too many power tools!
Incidentally, I think everbody knows this ain’t really a serious question to begin with, lol!

Why are so many women afraid of power tools and machinery?

Shakes asked:

Has anyone else ever noticed how much more timid women are with working around noisy power equipment, guns, and machinery than men are? Do they feel overpowered by this stuff or something?

Note: This doesn’t apply to all women, as I do know of several women that aren’t afraid of these things. Although, most of those I’ve talked with told me that they were afraid at first and then they got used to it over time.

Do you think I went too far with this? Should I have just let it slide?

Da Vinci Herself asked:

Well we were in the car driving to the city when a police woman was guiding a bus outside of a toll booth. My grandmother looked at her and went, ” *tsk.* Why is she out in the sun like that? She shouldn’t be doing a job like that! It’s hot, and they should have a man out there.”

So usually I just let those comments slide. She’s old, she doesn’t really know any better and she’s been taught to think this way. I just don’t know what clicked in me, but for some reason I felt like I had to respond. As we were driving past the toll booth, I said:

“You know what I really hate Grandma? Female construction workers. It’s like, who do they think they are? Don’t the know that men usually do jobs like those? It’s more dangerous for women to be handling power tools and helping build houses — they’re not built for jobs like that.”

My grandma looked pretty offended, and then I felt extremely guilty. Did I take it too far? Was it too offensive?
What could I have said that would have been more appropriate?
