Patents on cordless power tools and accessories?

John N asked:

For combo cordless power tool sets, there are many accessories the manufacturer promotes - the drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw, small vacuum, light, radio, etc.

If someone comes up with another tool that can be used, using the same batteries of a combo pack, can a patent be obtained for that idea?

Hypothetically speaking, lets say the radio for use in combination, with a specific brand power tool set has not been done before. Obviously, the radio is not new, nor is a battery powered radio. The idea of designing a radio to be powered by the same batteries used for the other accessories may be new and be allowed patent protection.

I have been doing some patent searching, but I’m having difficulty in narrowing the search down.
Any suggests on finding the patents on these manufacturers as it might relate to my situation?

Does it seem possible to get a patent like this, and how would I specify the claims?

How would I approach manufactures after filing?

Thanks.
I would hope to sell or license the idea to a power tool manufacturer like DeWalt or Ryobi. I wouldn’t expect to manufacture and sell this tool to be used with the battery packs of a different company.

I think the idea I would want to claim in the patent is, the combination of a specific device that is powered by the batteries of a tool kit. The tool kit comprising the various tools, the battery and charging unit.

Example - Let’s say the radio hasn’t been used in combination with a power tool kit. Could DeWalt have patented the combination of the two. This would be a benefit to DeWalt because their competition wouldn’t be able to offer that feature and thus customers might be more inclined to buy the DeWalt kit. This would result in more sales of the other DeWalt power tools to go with the batteries of that kit.

Is there an adapter to run my cordless tools as corded?

Joel asked:

I would like to run my cordless tool kit from AC power when available. This would save me from having to pack around redundant tools when I have a plug available. I guess I could twist the arm of some of my more electron-savvy friends to help build this, but maybe there is a commercially available option.?

JASON M asked:

I have UK 110v power tools which normally run off a 50Hz supply from a 240-110v transformer. Would these work using a Canada 120v receptacle, or would the frequency difference be a problem? I’m talking mostly drills and saws.
