Buying power tools for my husband. Brands?
Hello everyone,
I’m purchasing a tool set for my husband. I have selected a Makita Lithiom-Ion tool set for him that includes a drill, an impact drill, a light and a circular saw (whatever that is). The price is quite hefty (over $400 for the set).
My question is, is Makita a good brand? I’ve never heard of this brand.
It seems to be top rated, but I wondering if I should buy Dewalt, Skil or Milwakee instead. I’m trying to replace that piece of crap Black and decker set that i gave him for chrismas a couple of years back LOL.

Blunt,
I think Makita is a very good company to buy from. They make quality tools. There’s no reason to shy away from them. Although Dewalt and Milwaukee also are good brands. For the general purpose tools you’re selecting, you should be just fine. Your husband will be getting good quality.

Dewalt seem to be the only power tools that do not have a history of breaking. I have owned many crappy brands like Black and Decker, including Makita and Skil, and Dewalt is by far the better choice. Dealing with Makita specifically, i bought one of their power drills which broke in less than a month. C D
I think black and decker bought dewalt, regardless, dewalt and makita are good tools, its more important to keep the same brand for the battery charging and accessories.
i like Dewalt personally, my brother is a maintenance guy at an 100 apartment complex and uses Makita acres12
Makita is a very good brand, reliable and powerful. The other two brands I like are dewalt and Ryobi. I bought ryobi because I get the same power for a better price. I use my tools hard and have never had a problem. Plus, with the ryobi one system, the same batteries are able to be used in tons of different power items, trimmers, leafblowers, power tools, weedwackers, vacuums, etc. However all of these brands are great and will serve him well. You’re very wise to be concerned about quality over price when it comes to tools. Yes, Makita is a very good brand, and your husband should be happy with it.
Two more excellent brands that a lot of professionals use are DeWalt and Porter Cable. Pat S
Makita is a good brand. I have a makita cordless screw gun and have used it for about 12 years. You can still buy batteries for it and it is well constructed. I am not sure on the rest of the set though. A friend of mine has the complete Milwaukee and he loves it. I have used the set many times as well and really like it as well. I don’t think that you could go wrong with either of the two. Bubbaismyretardeddog
I’m a licensed electrician and use cordless tools everyday.
There is every conceivable brand at the job-site, and I’ve tried them all.
Two years ago my Porter-Cable crapped out, and after much research I bought the Makita 18V Lith-Ion, and I love it.
It has features that no other manufacturer has, and it doesn’t weight a lot. Some will disagree, but if you’re using the tool for hours on end, a heavy one will end up annoying you.
Do not buy a Ryobi, there’s a reason they’re so inexpensive.
Milwaukee has always been one of the best, BUT it was purchased buy the same company that makes Ryobi….so who knows.
In my opinion the 3 top tool companies out there now are;
1) Makita
2) Milwaukee
3) Bosch Do it right
milwukee is the best. all the plumbers and carpenters i know only use milwaukee. joseph z
yes get makita they are good dont buy your husband rubbish tools coz he will not do a good job with them. nannymcv
Makita Li-Ion tools are not very good. The batteries are junk, to be blunt. They don’t last long on a charge compared to other brands, and the number of charge cycles a battery has is MUCH lower than other brands. Be prepared to pay over $100 apiece to replace the batteries.
I.m not a huge DeWalt fan. The tools are decent, but again, batteries are a problem. If you want to get him a top of the line set, go with the V28 Milwaukee system. It’s a 28V Li-Ion, but the batteries weigh less than a Ni-MH 18V. Gives incredible run time without fatigue. The drawback-they’re expensive. They have an 18V Li-Ion set that is also very good. Their kit comes with a Sawzall instead of an impact driver, or with a Sawzall and an impact driver instead of a circular saw. Either way, it’s a great kit, and your husband will love it. I’m including links to both of these from Amazon. If you aren’t trying to surprise him, have him take a look. Hope this helps. woodtick314
a lot of people I know are going back to makita after having dewalt
personally i like bosch and milwakee if you can afford them Mr Fixit
Yes. Makita is a good brand. DeWalt is Black and Decker’s Industrial line of tools. Milwaukee is another good brand. Skil is good brand for home-owners who won’t use it for very long or very much.
The main question is what is he going to use it for? If home projects, good deal! At work, it will work very good, for a while. The tools will outlast the batteries. I think your husband will be happy. EagleWatcher
