I can’t add much to that, but the sculptor and letter-maker Eric Gill certainly did self-portraits of himself as a sculptor and using the appropriate tools. And there are many hundreds of paintings of The Crucifixion featuring the tools that the Roman soldiers used to attach Jesus to the Cross.
